Week 4 Assignment 1
RTI
is an approach used to identify students with learning disabilities, in order
to implement appropriate support and interventions to help them succeed. RTI
ensures that no child slips through the cracks. It provides all students with appropriate
and effective interventions, which will give them the skills they need to
become more accurate and fluent readers.
The RTI
approach consists of 3 Tiers.
In
Tier 1, all students receive high quality, intense phonics instruction. The general
ed teacher implements differentiated instruction, so that all students can
learn and be apart. This literacy instruction works for 80-85% of students.
If
students are not succeeding in their reading and require additional help, Tier
2 intervention is employed. Tier 2’s instruction is more targeted and systematic.
Small group instruction is given by highly trained teachers or specialists, inside
the regular classroom. They focus their instruction on the students’ needs, be it
phonics, comprehension, or fluency. This targeted intervention is a supplement
to the Tier 1 instruction, and it works for 15% of students.
If
students are still struggling and require more intervention, then Tier 3 intervention,
the most intense intervention, is provided to individual or very small groups
of students. This instruction is in addition to Tier 1 and 2 interventions. At
this point, the students are tested and the parents and teachers communicate to
discuss the option of special education services. This approach has been proven
successful and few students are referred to special education services.
It’s so important for teachers to enjoy teaching and for students
to enjoy learning! The activities and materials used in this program are exciting
and engaging for all! Additionally, the students are motivated to keep on
learning, since they are seeing progress in their reading and feel successful!
I am wondering how effective the Tier 1 interventions are for the
students with learning disabilities. Wouldn’t they gain so many more skills, more
clearly and quickly, from additional Tier 2 interventions? Would less Tier 1
and more Tier 2 interventions be more effective?
