Week 10 Assignment 3
The
Qualitive Reading Inventory-5 is an individually administered informal reading
inventory used to determine a student’s level of reading and comprehension. The
assessment consists of grade leveled word lists and narrative and expository
passages. There are a few parts to this assessment, so that a student’s reading
ability can be determined most accurately. This assessment can determine a
child’s independent, instructional, and frustration reading level. As
educators, it is important to determine students’ instructional level, so that
we can select appropriate level books for literacy circles and reading workshops,
to design and evaluate intervention instruction, and to assess students’
progress.
DIBELS
is a reading assessment that is researched based, that assesses the early literacy
and reading skills of young students. This assessment focuses on phonemic awareness,
alphabetic principle, fluency, and comprehension. DIBELS offers benchmark
scores to help inform teachers of their students’ literacy development. Based
on the scores, teachers can provide students with the appropriate intervention
if necessary, to help them meet the end of the year grade expectations. Additionally,
DIBELS allows for teachers to regulate students’ progress.
The QRI-5
and the DIBELS are both effective reading assessments that are used to assess student’s
literacy skills. Furthermore, both forms of assessments can determine if a
student requires intervention or not. However, there are several differences
between these assessments. Firstly, the QRI-5 is administered to individual
students from grades K-12 and is customized to their reading level. On the
other hand, DIBELS is a formal assessment, that is only used to assess students
from grades K-6. Secondly, the QRI-5 assesses students’ fluency and
comprehension and DIBELS additionally assesses students’ phonemic awareness and
alphabetic principle. Lastly, the QRI-5 is a longer, more detailed assessment tool
and DIBELS are 1-minute, short assessments.
Both
the QRI-5 and DIBELS are excellent assessment tools that can be used in the
classroom. These assessments can help educators determine the appropriate interventions
for all their struggling students. By using these assessments in my classroom, I
hope to give each one of my students the optimal opportunity to progress and
succeed in their education.
